III: Check home insurance before holding yard sale

People looking to make a little extra cash may consider holding a yard sale, which provides the added benefit of getting rid of unwanted clutter.

However, the Insurance Information Institute said recently people planning on holding a yard sale should make sure they are covered through their home insurance policies. Having someone injure themselves on a homeowner’s property could lead to a lawsuit.

Jeanne Salvatore, III spokeswoman and senior vice president, said consumers should check with their agent to see how much liability coverage they have on their home insurance and make sure it is adequate to protect their assets.

“We live in a very litigious society,” Salvatore said. “Having an adequate amount of liability protection is a very important financial protection.”

Consumers may also want to check to see how much liability coverage they have in case their animal attacks someone on their property, especially since many people may be walking through during a yard sale.

Standard home insurance should cover against dog bites, while owners would do well to train their pet to avoid such an occurrence in the first place.

You can avoid a bad decision or help get nudged towards a good one by reading consumer testimonials.

Getting the Right Auto Insurance Online

Getting auto insurance online is not as uncommon as it once was. With so many people using the internet to get insurance quotes, many companies have now made it possible to actually purchase your insurance policy and get proof of insurance instantly.

With so many car insurance company sites allowing auto insurance quotes, you may have a hard time figuring out what you need. Buying car insurance online or getting automobile insurance quotes can sometimes be majorly discounted compared to those you would get on the telephone or in a local office, so it is preferred by consumers.

You should figure out what coverage you want or need, since there are a couple of options. The one that offers the most and is the most expensive is full coverage. Full coverage cove almost every incident of damage. Agents sometimes offer this when they are talking about collision and comprehensive insurance combined, even though it does not cover every accident.

Collision insurance covers any damage to your vehicle or the other vehicle or object involved in the accident. Comprehensive insurance covers any type of damage that your vehicle incurs from theft, vandals and glass breaking. Most companies that allow a vehicle to be leased or bought brand new from a lot require a person to have a minimum of this type of physical damage insurance coverage.

Another option is liability only, and this covers bodily injuries and property damages only.

My Client Cancelled My Business Meeting Overseas – What Do I Do?

“I have had a business meeting scheduled in a foreign country for two months, and now my client has cancelled at the last minute – what can I do? My hotel and flight are booked, and they are nonrefundable! Have I lost my entire investment?” If you conduct business overseas, this very well could be a scenario you are faced with one day, so how can you react?

Well, the sad truth is that in a scenario like this, you most likely will lose all of the money you have spent on airline reservations and hotel accommodations. In today’s difficult economy, airlines and hotels are even less willing than before to bend the rules on refunding all or part of a user’s expense when cancellations arise.

However, there is one potential saving grace you may be able to turn to. That is trip cancellation insurance. If you have bought a trip cancellation policy, you can cancel or re-schedule travel plans with as little as 24 hours notice and still retain most or all of your financial investment! This is even applicable to nonrefundable flights.

Trip cancellation insurance can be used on hotels, airfare, and even event tickets. It requires only a small investment, and when you consider how much you may lose without it, you can easily see the value in purchasing it. And it protects you in a variety of scenarios; whether you need to cancel a trip for personal reasons, or a business issue like the one outlined earlier pops up, you will be protected.

Second summit for distracted driving unveiled

Distracted driving is a dangerous habit that can lead to more accidents and higher auto insurance rates.

To help combat the problem, the Department of Transportation will hold a second summit on distracted driving on September 21. Government officials, industry experts and members of the public will be involved in identifying nationally based strategies.

“One year after our first national Distracted Driving Summit, we will reconvene to take stock of our progress and reassess the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said.

LaHood said thousands of people are killed every year as the result of distracted-driving accidents. Teenagers may be especially susceptible to danger, since they are new to the road and may be more likely to use mobile devices.

Many states have already taken measures to try to reduce distracted driving. Others have banned text messaging while behind the wheel and have put forward stricter regulations for younger motorists.

Classrooms can participate in the second Distracted Driving Summit by watching its webcast at www.distraction.gov. Other members of the public are also invited to tune in, the Transportation Department said.

There are several factors to consider when selecting health insurance for students

It may seem strange to purchase private health insurance for a student. After all, students are generally young and in great shape. Their immune systems are high. They are physically active. Insurance, however, would be of great help to a student. This is especially true if the student just happens to be your child. Health insurance would be especially helpful to international students. There are several factors involved in choosing the right student insurance policy. Listed below are some of these factors.

The first thing you should consider is the length of time a student needs to be covered by private health insurance. Do you know how long your child will be studying abroad? Is the student part of a short exchange program or is the student taking a full college course? You must select a health insurance plan that is just the right length of time. You would not want your child to get sick in a foreign country and realize that you got an insurance policy that had already expired. Many countries dictate that international students must be covered by medical insurance. A policy that is too short means that your child might be breaking the law. To be safe, select an insurance policy that is a little longer than the duration of your child’s stay.

Another thing you should take into consideration is the maximum coverage amount to avail of. How do you know when it’s too much? You may not want to get the minimum coverage amount for private health insurance. T Read more…

III offers home insurance claims tips

While consumers may have a home insurance policy, how to go about making a claim may not be clear.

The Insurance Information Institute recently released advice regarding how home insurance policy holders can make the claims process go smoother. One thing people should do is immediately contact their provider with a description of the damage.

“Your agent will report the loss to your insurance company or to a qualified adjuster who will contact you as soon as possible to arrange to inspect the damage,” the III said.

Taking pictures of the damage may also come in handy, as can keeping an updated home inventory. The latter should include receipts associated with purchases, which can help determine what they are worth.

If policyholders are forced out of their houses because of damages, they should also hang on to receipts from the costs they incur. The III notes home insurance policies provide for some of these additional living expenses.

When people finally get around to making repairs, experts and government officials note they should only use reputable and licensed contractors. Not doing so could lead to fraud.
