Dog bite home insurance claims increased last year

Home insurance can cover a variety of liabilities faced by property owners, including the four-legged kind.

According to a recent report from the Insurance Information Institute, liability claims for dog bites amounts tied to these policies increased 8.7 percent from 2008 to 2009. The total costs for last year came to $412 million, with the average payout being $24,840.

“Since 2003 the cost of these claims has risen nearly 30 percent,” the III said. “Additionally, the number of claims has increased 4.8 percent to 16,586 in 2009 from 15,823 in 2008.”

Whether or not a homeowner is liable for damages tied to a dog bite may depend on their state and local statutes. Some municipalities may go so far as to ban certain breeds from their jurisdiction.

The III said that most home insurance policies provide between $100,000 and $300,000 of liability coverage for dog bites. However, some may restrict their policies by making their customers sign waivers or charge higher insurance rates for specific dog breeds, such as pit bulls and Rottweilers.

Consumers who are considering buying a particular dog breed may want to consult with both their insurance company and local government to make sure they are in compliance with rules and regulations.

Missionary Insurance Is an Essential Investment When Spreading the Good Word

One trend increasing in popularity in churches is to encourage more members to participate in missionary work overseas. As humanitarian efforts have become more well-publicized through news media and the internet, a growing number of religious followers realize that missionary travel allows them to help people in real need while also spreading the beliefs of their religion. If such a trip is in your future, be certain you invest in missionary insurance.

Missionary work typically takes people to dangerous locales. These may be places that are experiencing violence amongst citizens or areas that have been devastated by natural disasters. Areas that have fallen victim to hurricanes, earthquakes, and other catastrophes can be dangerous long after the event because of structural damage to infrastructure and buildings.

In addition to the dangers presented by violent activity and the residual problems that come from natural disasters, there are other pitfalls that may await visitors to these countries. For instance, air quality may be substandard, making you ill, or you may drink water contaminated with bacteria. Food poisoning is another common problem in areas where food preparation measures are below par.

These potential illnesses and injuries can harm more than just your physical well-being. Without insurance, the resulting hospital bills can put a dent in your finances. Read more…

Americans may want to rush to get home insurance against floods

Consumers who are interested in home insurance that covers flood damage may want to hurry, according to a recent report from the Insurance Information Institute.

The organization noted that the National Flood Insurance Program will lose its authorization on September 30, 2010, and there is no guarantee that Congress will extend it immediately.

The NFIP provides for financial protection against flood damage. It is especially important during this time of year, which marks the height of the hurricane season.

Michael Barry, vice president of media relations for the III, said that this wouldn’t be the first time the program was allowed to end.

“The program was allowed to lapse for weeks starting on June 1 of this year, the official start of the hurricane season, and the NFIP could very well meet the same fate again this fall,” Barry said.

Other problems tied to previous ends of the NFIP included making it difficult for consumers to secure the insurance needed to finalize a home loan. This is especially an issue in areas that are prone to floods, such as land along the Mississippi and coastal states.

Medical Errors Annually Cost at Least $19.5 Billion Nationwide

Schaumberg, Illinois, August 9, 2010 – Findings from a new study released today estimate that measurable medical errors cost the U.S. economy $19.5 billion in 2008. Commissioned by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and completed by consultants with Milliman, Inc., the report used claims data to provide an actuarially sound measurement of costs for avoidable medical injuries. Of the approximately $80 billion in costs associated with medical injuries, around 25 percent were the result of avoidable medical errors.

Report shows how 1.5 million medical errors compromise quality of American healthcare and cause unnecessary waste in the system

“This report highlights a singular opportunity for both improving the overall quality of care and reducing healthcare costs in this country,” says Jim Toole, FSA, CERA, MAAA and managing director of MBA Actuaries, Inc. “Of the $19.5 billion in total costs, approximately $17 billion was the result of providing inpatient, outpatient and prescription drug services to individuals who were affected by medical errors.
While this cost is staggering, it also highlights the need to reduce errors and improve quality and efficiency in American healthcare.”

Medical errors are a significant source of lost healthcare funds every year. For
